据说，屈原在两千多年以前的 农历五月初五 ，跳进了汨罗江自杀了。百姓们自从知道这件事情以后，就划船打捞他的尸体，结果什么也没捞到，人们就划龙船、扔粽子，引开鱼虾，以免伤害屈原的尸体。有的还把艾草点燃，熏走害虫。
端午节的习俗还有很多，画“王子”、赛诗、演唱等等。
