fear用法归纳
用作动词,注意以下用法:
(1) 表示“恐惧”“害怕”,其后接动词时,可用不定式或动名词(注:用不定式比用动名词常见)。
如:He feared to speak in public.
他害怕在公共场合讲话。
He fears to tell [telling] her what happened.
他怕告诉她所发生的事。
(2) 表示“恐怕”“担心”,其后通常接that从句。
如:I fear that he will refuse us. 我担心他会拒绝我们。
在答语中 that 从句可用 so, not 代之。
如:A:Will he come?
他会来吗?
B:I fear so. /I fear not.
我想会来吧/我想不会来吧。
【注】后接否定的宾语从句时,通常不转移到主句。
如:I fear it won’t do much good.
我担心这不会有多大好处。
(3) 通常不接不定式的复合结构。
如:
我担心他会失败。
误:I fear him to fail.
正:I fear that he will fail.
(4) 比较fearsb与fearforsb:前者意为害怕某人,后者意为为某人担心。
如:
He fears his wife.
他怕他老婆。
He fears for his wife.
他为他老婆担心。
2用作名词,比较forfearof与infearof:前者意为“由于怕……”“以防……”,后者意为“害怕”“担心”。
如:
Shut the window for fear of catching a cold.
关闭窗户以免感冒。
We’re in fear of more snow.
我们担心会再下雪。
The thief passed the day in fear of discovery.
这个小偷整天提心掉胆担心会被发现。

二、词义辨析:哪些词还表示“害怕”呢?
alarm, fear, fright, horror, panic, terror, dread
这些名词均含“恐惧、惧怕、惊恐”之意。
alarm强调突然意识到有危险而产生的恐惧心理。
fear普通用词,侧重指面临危险或灾祸时内心所引起的恐惧心情。
fright通常指一阵突然的、令人震惊的短暂恐惧,有时含夸张意味。
horror侧重指因看到令人讨厌或危险的东西或情景而引起的厌恶情绪、极度恐惧心情或战栗的动作。
panic常指因突如其来的外界威胁使人群出现惊慌、恐惧或混乱。
terror指极大的恐惧和惊骇,语气最强。
dread可与fear换用,着重害怕的心理,但dread常指胆怯和丧失勇气。

第一个Alarm
alarm这个单词在表示警报的时候一般是单数,可数名词,如经济学人...they promptly sounded an alarm.
但是在表示恐慌的时候是不可数名词,如科林斯词典例句:
The doctor said there was no cause for alarm.
医生说不必惊慌。
还比如经济学人在说此次疫情的时候就使用了alarm,如:
The coronavirus discovered in China is causing global alarm.

第二个Scare
Scare可以作动词,也可以是名词,我们看看柯林斯词典里面的解释:
[C] (used especially in newspapers 尤用于报章) 恐慌;恐惧 a situation in which a lot of people are anxious or frightened about sth,如:
to cause a major scare
引起严重恐慌
还比如经济学人在说此次疫情的时候就使用了scare,如:

第三个Fear
fear可以作动词,如many people fear change许多人惧怕改变。
Fear可数名词和不可数名词都有见过,如:
I was sitting on the floor shivering with fear.
我坐在地板上,吓得发抖。
He also spoke of his fears for the future of his country's culture.
他也谈到了对祖国文化前途的担忧。
还比如经济学人在说此次疫情的时候就使用了fear,如:
People’s fear is understandable.
The fears are understandable.
人们恐惧是可以理解的。
还比如金融时报:
The economic impact of Sars was driven mainly by fear, analysts at JPMorgan said, as consumers changed their behaviour to avoid close contact with other people.

注意on fears over是固定表达,表示因为/由于担心……
常见的表达还有for fear of/that,如:
She was afraid to say anything to them for fear of hurting their feelings.
她什么都不敢对他们说,以免伤害他们的感情。
还有固定用法,如:
At some time or other Eve had obviously put the fear of God into her.
显然伊芙时不时有意吓唬她一下。
There was no fear that指没有……的可能性。 (坏事发生的)可能性,机会,几率。If you say that there is a fear that something unpleasant or undesirable will happen, you mean that you think it is possible or likely. 如:
There was no fear that anything would be misunderstood
并无引起误会的可能性。

第五个Terrorise
Terrorise是动词,如经济学人这句:
The new virus is a close relative of sars (severe acute respiratory syndrome), which emerged in China in 2002 and terrorised the world for over half a year before burning out.
这种新型病毒和非典(严重急性呼吸系统综合征)病毒是近亲。2002年中国爆发了非典疫情,造成世界范围半年多时间的恐慌,然后才逐渐消失。

as much as表示程度的6种用法
1. 译为“尽量”“尽最大努力(可能)”,主要用于as…as possible [one can]。如:
You ought to rest as much as possible. 你应当尽量多休息。
I have helped you as much as I can. Now it is up to you. 我已尽我所能地帮助你了。现在该看你自己了。
I won't have a pudding it was as much as I could do to finish the very large first course. 我不要布丁了——我能把第一道大菜吃完就已经很不容易了。
2. 译为“像……一样(的程度)”。如:
He doesn't think of you as much as he ought to. 他没有像本应该的那样对你好。
We're in the dark just as much as you are. 我们跟你们一样被蒙在鼓里。
I don't pretend to know as much as he does about it. 我不敢说我对此事的了解有他那样多。
He doesn't think of you as much as he ought to. 他没有像本应该的那样对你好。
I like cats as much as dogs. 我喜欢猫和喜欢狗和程度相同。(此句可视为 I like cats as much as I like dogs 之省略)
3. 译为“与……一样多”。如:
I haven't as much responsibility as before. 我不再担负过去那样多的责任了。
4. 译为“好像”“几乎”“并不多”“等于”。如:
That is as much as saying I am a liar. 那无异于说我撒谎。
He as much as admitted that it was his fault. 他几乎承认说是他的错。
You said “all right”, which was as much as to say that you were satisfied. 你当是说“行”,这就等于说你认为满意。
注:as much as to say [saying] 可视为习语,意为“等于说”。
5. 译为“既……又”“不仅……而且”。如:
It is as much our responsibility as yours. 这既是你们的责任,也是我们的责任。
It is as much your responsibility as mine. 这件事你和我一样都有责任。
He retorted that it was my fault as much as his. 他反驳说那不仅是他的错,而且也是我的错。或:他反驳说我的错误并不比他的错误小。
I expect to weep as much as (to) laugh. 我简直又想哭,又想笑。
6. 有时有较灵活的译法:
His latest play is not so much a farce as a burlesque tragedy. 他最近的一个剧本与其说是一个滑稽剧,不如说是一个滑稽的悲剧。
