Tulong Zizhu told Chang Yang who had come to learn archery under him a story that contained principles of archery in it: the king of the state of Chu once hunted in Yun Mengze. A stopped dear ran out to his left, the king aimed an arrow at it and just before letting the arrow go, an elk1 appeared to his right. When he was about to shoot the elk, a swan flew by. The king was totally lost as to which one to shoot.
Yang Youji, a master of archery, came over to the king and said, "If a leaf is put a hundred paces away, I can shoot it ten times without missing2 it. If ten leaves are there, I am not sure if I can still do it."
